Questions and Answers
Do you cook these in your own home? Nope! All meals prepared by The Homestead Chef are made in our own commercial kitchen approved by the Calgary Health Region.
Is this a subscription service? Do I have to order every week? Again, no. You can order as regularly or as infrequently as you choose. This is about your convenience, so you choose when you need meals.
Is this super-expensive? No way! One of the basic goals of The Homestead Chef is to provide high-quality, real food that's affordable. The meals are priced individually, with some variation according to ingredients, but most meals cost about $7.00 or $8.00 each. About the same price as a reasonable restaurant meal.
Why aren't meals available every day, like a restaurant? Unlike restaurants, we don't pre-purchase our fresh ingredients in bulk and hope to sell them before they go off. We purchase what we need to satisfy the orders we have. By collecting the orders in advance we can ensure we are purchasing "just in time" which means fresher ingredients and less waste (which helps keep your prices down).
Can I order specialty meals? If you have special dietary requirements, you might find that the individualized menus offered by our Personal Chef service is better suited to your needs.
Do you use any pre-prepared foods? Yes, some. However, whenever we choose prepared food, we carefully evaluate it to ensure that it has none of the added "junk" so common in these types of items. For example, the tomato paste we use has one ingredient - tomatoes. Also, when we need beef broth (and have run out of our own handmade broth) we select an organic one that has none of the "hydrolyzed, autolyzed, hydrogenated, high-fructose, sodium-ized" stuff. Who'd want to eat food that requires a chemistry lesson to know what's in it?
